Why Movement Matters for Your Baby’s Development

A baby’s first few years are a remarkable time of growth and development. By around two years of age, their brain has reached approximately 80% of its adult size.

But development is about much more than growth alone.

During these early years, the brain is rapidly developing and strengthening connections. Movement and sensory experiences provide valuable information that may help support this process.

This is one of the reasons we pay close attention to how babies are moving, functioning and progressing through their developmental milestones.

From turning their head and reaching for a toy to kicking, rolling, pushing up through their arms, sitting and crawling, babies are constantly exploring their bodies and surroundings.

Through movement, babies experience different sensations and learn about how their bodies move in space. Ideally, babies have opportunities to move, explore and experience movement in both directions.

A baby who finds it easier to look, reach, roll or move towards one side may have fewer opportunities to explore certain movements in the opposite direction.

Every baby develops at their own pace, and some variation in movement patterns can be completely normal. However, if you have concerns about your baby’s movement, development or a consistent preference for one side, it can be helpful to seek appropriate professional advice.

At Waverley Road Chiropractic & Wellness in Malvern East, we take a holistic approach and consider your baby’s individual movement patterns and development. Where appropriate, we may also recommend further assessment or referral to another qualified health professional.
