Did you know that there’s actually a lot more happening during a chiropractic adjustment than just the sound you might hear?
Your joints, muscles and surrounding tissues contain sensory receptors that constantly provide information to your nervous system about movement, position and load. During an adjustment, a quick movement is applied to a joint, providing a burst of sensory input. This information travels through the nervous system, where it is processed by the spinal cord and brain.
Research suggests that spinal adjustments may influence aspects of sensory processing, sensorimotor integration and pain processing. However, the response to an adjustment can vary from person to person, and more research is needed to understand exactly how these effects relate to individual outcomes.
And what about the “crack” that we hear?
That sound isn’t the main goal of an adjustment. It is associated with a change in pressure within the joint and the release of gas within the joint space. An adjustment doesn’t need to make a noise to provide sensory input.
Your nervous system is constantly responding to information coming from your body. As chiropractors, part of our role is to look at how you’re moving and consider appropriate ways to provide movement and sensory input as part of your care.
