W-Sitting... What is it?

W-sitting is a common seated position for children 👧🧒👦. In this position, a child sits on their bottom with both knees bent and their feet and legs out to each side. Many parents don’t see this position as having a negative impact on growth and development as it can be seen as ‘normal’.

The W position is a position for children which doesn't require much core, trunk strength or postural control, this is why some children prefer to sit and play in this posture and it becomes a habit. Children who have low tone, hypermobile joints or decreased core and posture control will be more likely to adopt this sitting position. 😮

Children are constantly developing and if used frequently, this position can place excessive and abnormal forces onto their low back, hips, knees and feet. This may affect the development of these structures as well as reducing their core strength, trunk control and spinal movements!  😣

So, what can you do if you notice your child is preferring this seated position? 🤔 Be consistent in correcting their sitting posture! 😄 The earlier you do this, the easier it will be. Encouraging them to change positions every time you see them w-sitting is the best way to break this habit.

Core strength is also important as weakness may be the reason for their sitting position, working on their strength will also help them transition to a better seated position. Encourage cross body movements, for example reaching across the body for toys. 🧸

As this is an indication of underlying weakness or poor gross motor skills, it is important to keep an eye on it and potentially reach out for help from your health care professional. 👍

Our chiropractors can assess your child's development and encourage good movement patterns and strength with treatment.
