Plagiocephaly: It's About More Than Head Shape

When most people think of plagiocephaly (flat head syndrome), they think of the shape of a baby's head. While head shape is important, it's often only one part of the story.

At Waverley Road Chiropractic and Wellness, we're interested in understanding why the flat spot developed in the first place. Does your baby prefer looking to one side? Are they moving comfortably in both directions? How are they going with tummy time, rolling and reaching their developmental milestones?

These movement patterns can all play a role, which is why we take a whole-body approach when assessing babies with plagiocephaly.

Our assessment looks at more than just head shape. We also consider neck movement, muscle tone, reflexes and overall development before tailoring recommendations to your baby's individual needs. This may include gentle hands-on care, positioning advice, tummy time strategies and simple exercises to continue at home.

If you've noticed a flat spot or your baby consistently favours one side, an early assessment can help identify contributing factors and provide practical strategies to support healthy movement and development.

If you have any questions about your baby's head shape or development, our team at Waverley Road Chiropractic and Wellness in Malvern East is here to help. Book now at waverleyroadchiro.com.au/book-online
